Lillias Healy, St. Angela’s College, Cork
My week here at BEES in UCC was better than I could have expected. I came only interested in zoology but then was exposed to a whole verity of sciences.
My favourite things we did were orientated around zoology so I enjoyed the bird ringing and the experiment on the sea urchins the most. I was fascinated by the Geology, which was something I wouldn’t have looked sideways at before or thought of all the amazing job one can get with a degree in it. I never saw how expanded science has become and how dedicated people become after specializing.
I enjoyed learning about plants and how clever and adaptable they are or how much you can learn from looking at a fossil. I was completely fascinated about what the lectures had to say and their ability to be so focused on a topic of research after such a long time. I loved learning about all the courses even though now I am as sure as ever zoology is what I would like to study.
I was impressed by the immense size of the UCC library and the care the librarians treat it with. I did like the collection of preserved animal though I found a few of the mutated ones slightly scary but it was impressive none the less. The radio tracking was probably one of the more amusing actives as we had to hide the device while others had to spend ages looking for it!
I was glad I came as I learnt a lot about all the available course and the amazing things that you can do in UCC. I found all the people here to be nice, the lecturers engaged and am very thankful for the help that Grace and Susan gave us. Overall I found my experience here to be educational and worthwhile.
