My week at the BEES Programme for TY students was a very useful experience as it gave me excellent insight into the life of a scientist and how environmental science contributes to the development and conservation of our planet and our delicate eco-system. The week also provided me with an understanding of a student’s life here in UCC as we participated in a tour of the UCC library and campus.
My favourite activity that scheduled for us was the zoology practical. The practical was very stimulating and was the best because we, as TY students got to conduct analysis on the behaviours of live sea urchins. We participated in an experiment to see which material a sea urchin would be more attracted to: an organic material or a non-organic material. This moment stood out in my mind as being the best because the experiment was fun, interactive and gave a teaser for what you could study as a college student if you chose zoology as your field of study.
This week here at BEES has opened my eyes to the wonders of Biological Science and the importance that it has, not just in the overall scheme of things but, in everyday life as well. I came to this programme expecting boring lectures and practicals , but this programme has aided me in my choice for my future career and I hope that one day, I will apply for a course in the Biological Science field.
