I turned up Monday morning to the distillery fields campus, not quite sure where I was, slightly disorientated and groggy after the early start to get the 7 o’clock train from Tralee. I walked into the cooperage building not knowing where to go and having very little idea what to expect from this week. We had heard about this particular course from our TY co-ordinator and as per usual I signed up with very little knowledge of what I was signing up for. Saying that, I do have a particular interest in environmental studies, so I guess this course was suited to me.
When we received our timetable on Monday morning I was amazed by the diverse range of activities we would be undertaking during the week and the various different subjects we would be receiving lectures on.
Prof. Andy Wheeler and Prof. Peter Jones altered my preconceptions about these particular subjects completely.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the various practicals that we took part in during the week from studying mammal hairs under a microscope to bird ringing in the freezing cold. Through doing practicals I really got a taste for the work that comes with being a BEES student. It showcased the subjects in a fun and engaging way.
I will take a lot away from this week, I have definitely got a taste of the BEES lifestyle and what is involved in this course. I have gained valuable knowledge that I hope will help an assist me when making future decisions. The course surpassed my expectations and I am very happy that I decided to sign up!
