TY2013: “I’m considering a career in science in the future”

I spent this week in the UCC’s School of BEES for my transition year work experience. It is on the North Mall in Cork City. There were fourteen places on the course for students.

On the first day we got a general introduction to the school and we got to look at stuffed specimens which are collected here in the school. It was very interesting. We also got to look at geology and fossils which we then sketched.

On Tuesday we were told about ecology and zoology courses here in BEES. We got to undertake an experiment using sea urchins. This was my favourite part of the week. We then had a plant science lecture.

I thoroughly enjoyed this week

On Wednesday we were taken to the main college campus of UCC on College Road. We were shown the library which has four floors and given a general history of UCC. On Thursday we had a poster competition. We were split into four groups and were given a topic each, we then had to research the topic eg. Geology and create an interesting poster to catch people’s attention.

This was enjoyable as it helped us to socialise with the other transition years from different schools. On Friday we had a talk on GM plants and how the public has reacted to them.We were then asked to write this article about our week.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this week and I am considering a career in science in the future.
